Automotive Challenges And Solutions
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a monumental change in every industry across the world. Though the automobile and the automotive sector suffered an enormous loss last year due to global lockdowns and stay-at-home directives, it is set to rejuvenate itself. With every automaker’s reinvention into a digital company, 2021 will witness a significant upheaval in the automotive sector. The highly-disruptive changes will not only affect the global automotive and automobile industry sales, but they will also usher in a new era where the automotive industry will become a primary player in the worldwide Quantum Computing sector.
But certain areas of the automotive and automobile industry are still traditional. Though the processes regarding the construction, assimilation, and amalgamation of structures have undergone automation, these structures are always built from metals and metal alloys. Until and unless some vigorous innovation occurs, these areas will remain the same.
So, let’s focus on specific challenges and the intended solutions concerning an auto-transfer case.
What is a transfer case?
A transfer case is a component of an automobile, especially the 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transfer cases are the ideal components to redirect power to the front or the rear wheels depending on whether the car is in a 2-wheel or a 4-wheel drive. Typically, during a 2-wheel drive, the transmission power gets directed through the rear gear shaft into the rear differential.
But there are times that a truck or an SUV is put on a 4-wheel drive. During those instances, the transfer case differentiates the transmission torque by engaging both the front and the rear driveshafts and delivering power to both the differentials.
There are different model numbers depending on the make and design of the transfer cases. One of the most typical and usual lines of transfer cases is the 246gm transfer case. Built along with its compatriots and industrially-reproduced since the 2000s, they are serving automobiles superbly.
Challenges regarding a transfer case:
The 246 gm transfer case and other models’ moving chain requires fluids inside to maintain lubrication and dissipate excess heat that might damage the machine parts. Hence, there should be a pump inside, for the seamless circulation of the transmission fluid.
Solutions of the transfer case and pump model:
- Designs in the pump ears and the indentations in the transfer case should be quality controlled so that there is no imperfect design.
- Design and fabrication can be automated.
- To deliver the most effective solution, the General Motors company manufactures the transfer case out of magnesium. Since it is considerably lighter and softer than the pump itself, the continuous rubbing against the pump caused the transfer case to develop a hole in it. But if your transfer case creates such a hole, there is no alternative solution than to rebuild it entirely. A certified drivetrain specialist should be implementing the rebuilding procedure, which is quite expensive.
